At Sale today Wallasey Athletic Club hope to add the Cheshire County Road Relay championship to their recent road race successes. With their strongest team all available and running well, it seems unlikely they will be beaten.
After a cross-country season of mixed success, Wallasey's distance runners have over the past two months come into their best running at the same time and have blended together to form a most formidable team.
Several of the team have been keeping in trim in occasional races, of which perhaps the most notable was Kevin Mather's mile in 4 minutes 21 seconds for Cheshire against the Christie Club at Manchester last Saturday.
Also competing for Cheshire at Manchester were field events men Carl Gee and Matt Smith. Gee's excellent throw of 127 ft. 1 ins. gave him second place in the discus, and in the shot putt he recorded 38 ft. 7½ ins. Smith took 3rd place in the high jump with 5 ft. 4 ins.
