Running in an Inter-Counties match at Leicester, Wallasey Athletic Club's track captain, Dave Lockley, proved he is rapidly approaching national standard in the steeplechase.
Being selected to run for Cheshire in such an important match gave Dave the opportunity of running against some top class opposition on the perfect Leicester track.
At the 1500 metre stage of the 3,000 metre event Dave took the lead, never being seriously challenger, winning by five metres from D. Lem (Warwickshire) in 9 mins. 1 sec., a best by over 20 seconds.
At the same meeting Peter Lewis ran well in the 800 metres, after a slow first lap, Pete took the lead, only to be caught on the final circuit to drop to third in 1 min. 54.7 secs.
Later in the afternoon Peter again did well to take third in the 400 metres in 51 secs. Alan Cheers selected for the long jump never reached his best jumping just over 19ft., but later went on to produce some good triple jumps.
Today the club is competing in an inter-club at Stretford, and tomorrow are travelling to Denbigh for a 3-mile handicap race.
