This year's H. S. Finney championships were held at Stanley Park, Blackpool. The programme consisted of two races, a senior 4x3 miles relay and a youths' and boys' composite team 4x2 miles relay.
The first race was for boys and youths in which Wallasey Athletic Club had two teams. The chances of success looked slim as the 'A' team struggled. Peter Martin on the first leg was 8th, Steve Scully dropped to 11th, but the youths Gary Fair and Bob Warburton pulled the team back up to 6th place.
PRIZEWINNERS
The 'B' team however won the prize for the first 'B' team finishing in 14th place. After steady running ' by Ewen Griffiths and Alan Ostler and the youths Bob Brimage and Roy McGovern.
Wirral Athletic Club won the premier awards after leading all the way.
With two of the leading seniors unavailable only one full team competed. Dave Lockley was the outstanding runner, although still in his 'teens', he completed the course in one of the fastest times of the day with most of the leading N.W. runners competing, he also finished 2nd on the first leg just behind Dwyer (Pembroke A.C.).
RAN BADLY
Dave Lindsey was unable to maintain the position and dropped to sixth, Phil Wealthy RAN BADLY to drop a further two places and Mike Whiteside just recovered from flu ran the final leg finishing 9h.
Today is the third League race at Arrowe Park, when it is hoped a full team will be available.
