Wallasey Athletic Club's summer championships began at Leasowe Road playing fields on Monday evening and will continue until next Saturday afternoon, when the last thirteen events will be decided.
On Monday the senior 6 mile provided some excitement when Arnold Dinsdale passed the finish right on the standard dead line (35 minutes), in third place behind Bob Johnson, who won by a lap in 33 minutes 29 seconds, and John MacFarland.
In the junior hop, step and jump Ken Bradshaw passed the 33 foot standard, returning 34 feet. 7 inches. Penny Price won the women's long jump and was the only one to gain the 15 feet 6 inches standard with a leap of 16 feet 7½ inches.
On Wednesday evening Bob Fullerton won the junior 880 yards in 2 minutes 8 seconds from a keen field of whom two others, Dave Johnson and Michael Crisp, also passed the standard of 2 minutes 15 seconds. A close finish in the women's 220 yards resulted in a win for Beryl Hallam, who also bettered the standard time of 29.5 seconds. Both competitors in the senior pole vault attained the standard of 8 feet 6 inches, Matt. Smith winning with 10 feet 6 inches and Olatunde Lawrence clearing 8 feet 6 inches. Ken Ledward equalled the junior pole vault standard with a vault of 7 feet.
With the advent of the dark evenings, it is now a matter of some urgency to put up the new club headquarters into working order at an early date. To this end working parties will be engaged in erection and laying flooring this afternoon and on both Sunday morning at ten and Sunday afternoon at 2.30. Club activities will have to halt until the new building is ready to accommodate them, so the more often members lend a hand in the work, the sooner completion will be attained.
