Alan Pennington, Wallasey's finest athlete and one of England's greatest, has decided not to take any further part in competitive athletics.
Pennington, an Oxford blue, Olympic sprinter, and A.A.A. champion, will not defend his 440 yards title at the A.A.A. Championships at White City, and has also withdrawn from the Northern Counties team to go to Ireland next month.
The son of ex-Alderman John and Mrs. Pennington, of Wallasey, he has played cricket for Neston, rugby for Birkenhead Park, and is a member of Wallasey Golf Club. He may go to South America for his firm in due course, so that his services would eventually have been lost in any case.
Mr. Pennington is an old boy of Berkhampstead School.
