In the Cheshire Road Relay Championships on Saturday, Wallasey A.C., produced a good team performance to take 14th place. Fastest leg of the day was 15:53 by Robin Jones, who in his first race for the club did exceptionally well to break 16 minutes for the 5km course.
Other good runs came from Keith Simpson with a personal best of 16:24, Rob Howarth with a personal best of 17:23 and Dave Baker producing his best run for two years to record 16:26.
In the Mersey Marathon, John Cottrell led for a short spell early on and still held fifth place after five miles. He dropped back to 23rd place by the finish, but was still second veteran and maintained his superbly consistent record, by breaking 2:40 for the fourth time in the four marathons he has run in the last two years.
His time of 2:38 was the best ever by a Wallasey runner in this event. Les Pullin was unlucky to miss his best time by one minute as he recorded 2:58.
Jim Kirby was also to suffer in the latter part of the race and finished a fair way outside his best time with 3:06, but Mal Hardcastle ran strongly the whole way to knock 15 minutes off his previous best with a time of 3:02.
In the prestigious Westminster Mile Road Race, Lynne Kennedy contested the 19-23 aged group, and had a superb run to finish 3rd.
Rob McWilliam, who joined the club a week ago surprised a number of people by taking second place in the Wirral seaside run on September 12th, in a strong field in which James Downey finished 6th and Jim Kirby 8th.
