The Northern Women's Cross-Country Championships at Rawtenstall on January 25 saw impressive team performances from Wallasey A.C. in two of the younger age groups.
In the under-15 race, Joanne Johnson was first home in 102nd place, with Liesel Phillips 120th and Emma Derwent 156th which, with three to score, represented excellent 'packing' by the Wallasey girls.
The under-13 race saw exceptional performances from Collette Winstanley in 84th place and Paula Simpson in 112th, while Jackie Smith also ran well to finish 256th, arid complete the team.
Wallasey did not have a senior women's team at Rawtenstall, but did recently have two members gain selection for the Merseyside Women's team.
These were Marie Burke and Lynne Kennedy who both performed very well in this high standard contest to finish 108th and 109th respectively. The battle for places in Wallasey's National Cross-Country Championship team has now entered its final phase, with only the Northern Championships on February 8 left, to settle which nine runners will gain selection. Up to 20 runners have come into contention at one point or another which is indicative of the great improvement in the club's in-depth strength in recent years.
Alec Boughey has remained the top runner throughout the winter, finishing first scorer in most races, as well as breaking the course record for the club's Christmas handicap.
Others who have run consistently well are Pete Lonsdale, Bob Brimage, Gordon Rowe, Keith Simpson, Dave Walton and new member John Cottrell.
