A remarkable performance from the minor girls in the 4 x 200m. At the end of a physically demanding and successful day for Wallasey A.C.
On Sunday there was an outstanding run by young Emma Derwent on the second leg that put the team from third to first in the space of 200m. And much to the ecstasy and excitement of Wallasey's supporters, the squad maintained their lead in a fast and excitingly close race. Praise should go to Joanne Johnson, Emma Derwent, Liesel Phillips and Jayne McCoy, anchoring the team to home.
The strong wind and poor track were obviously no obstacle to Emma Derwent who began the meeting with a personal best time of 14.4 seconds. She captured the attention of the spectators by stealing the lead with 300m. To go and she fully deserved her victory.
Paul Beacall, in the 200m., showed great sprinting potential and finished second in 26.5 seconds.
The 800m. Gave the chance for Rob Howarth and Andy Pennington to show their prowess - they both reduced their best times at this distance by a couple of seconds. The men's 800m. Saw Dave Pendleton and James Downey reap the benefit of a hard winter's training. They both ran personal best times.
The 1500m. Events brought mixed results and feelings with a win by Paul Backhouse, who made a clear break from the rest of the pack to win comfortably. The other younger boys didn't run as good as they usually do at the 1500m., but their disappointment soon disappeared with later success in the day. In the senior women's 1500m, Lynne Kennedy took on the pace and opened up a lead. After a slow first lap, then led comfortably until the last 150m., where a slight lack of endurance resulted in fourth place, which was a most satisfying result for the first of the season.
Once again, the girls produced a fine string of results with three best recorded times and a win in the 800m. By Vicky Duckworth, Collette Winstanley, Emma Derwent, and Joanne Johnson running in the 'A' race inevitably recorded the fastest time amongst them.
