Sunday morning saw a contingency of Wallasey A.C. members travelling to Deeside to take part in road races from Kelsterton College.
First off were the under-15 boys on a two-mile course around the college. Andrew Pennington, a relatively new member, led Wallasey's athletes home to finish in 8th position after running very well. He was closely followed by Rob Howarth who also ran well to finish in ninth position.
Chris Lees and Paul Bacall, both good sprinters, used the race for the purpose of building up their stamina and finished 17th and 21st respectively.
The junior girls under 15 race had Lisa O'Hara and Diane Dasher lining up. This was run over 1½ miles and Lisa ran well to finish seventh while Diane was unfortunate and not feeling well, had to drop out of her race.
What a thrilling sight it was to see the colts team leading the field after the first lap in their 1½ miles race with Mike King finishing second, Mark Yates third, Nigel Thompson fourth and Dave Dasher eighth. Mike and Mark both received medals after their fine performance.
In the girls under 13 race of one mile, we had four girls competing and comparatively new to this age group running very well with Joanne Johnson, Jane McCoy and Emma Derwent finishing within seconds of each other in seventh, eighth and ninth position, with Kerry Eaton a little further behind.
The under 11 boys ran half a mile with Paul Johnson having one of his best races for a long while to come through the field to finish fresh and strong in seventh position with Neil Cross also running well to finish close behind in 10th position, newcomer Mike Kendall, finishing 11th, ran very well in one of his first races for the club.
Collette Winstanley, running in her first race in the under 11 girls, ran extremely well to finish in third position and was awarded with a medal afterwards while Michelle Rogerson in the same race did her best but unfortunately had to drop out with breathing problems.
Finally the climax of the day was the senior men's six mile road race which saw Bob Brimage running very well to finish in seventh position not far behind the international runner Tony Blackwell who won the race. Thanks to all those who turned up to compete and support on such a lovely sunny day.
