On Sunday, Wallasey Athletic Club travelled to St. Helens to take part in the Harlandic Benbrook Trophy first round. Congratulations should go to each and every athlete all of whom competed in more than one event in very warm conditions to produce some very good results enabling the men to almost certainly go through to the final after finishing the day in second position.
The girls ran very well to finish in 7th position without the help of the inter and senior ladies who were busy competing in the second round of the G.R.E. Cup at Stretford.
Thanks must go to Bob Brimage and Alan Johnson (Alan recording his fastest times for many years in the 100 and 200m) who between them competed in 18 events. Dave Neal, returning after a long spell of injury, recorded a personal best in the boys' 100m in a time of 13.3, while Mike King and Paul Johnson ran very well in the colts 200m to record personal best times of 29.6 and 32.2 respectively. The Mike went on to win the colts 1500m.
Mark Cooper ran extremely well to win the boys 1500m event in a personal best of 4:41. Chris Lees, a new member of Wallasey A.C., made his mark in the boy's high jump finishing second with a jump of 1,52m.
In the senior men's 800m Kevin McGee, running with blisters on his feet recorded his best time this season of 1.58.4 to finish third and then went on to compete with James Downey, in the senior men's 3000m, James recording a personal best of 9.55.
Many thanks must go to Dave Pendleton and Ian Wiggins for the effort they put in compete in almost every event in the youths' age group.
In the girls' events Lisa Hawley ran well to finish third in the 800m breaking the time barrier of 2.40 also finishing third in the 100m, while elder sister Elaine did well to finish second and third in the 200m and 100m respectively, and then went on to compete in the high jump along with Diane Dasher.
Cheryl Dyer competed in the junior girl's shot to record a personal best of 6.68m. Jane McCoy did well in the girls 200m to record a personal best of 30.9, while Joanne Johnson ran very well in the girls 1500m finishing in second place and recording a personal best of 5.19.3 knocking nine seconds off her previous best time.
To finish off the day, all age groups, except the youths competed in the 4 x 100m relay, with the girls finishing fourth, the colts in second place, junior girls in fourth position, the boys in third and finally the senior men in sixth position. Ladies:
After a very unexpected selection, the female section of Wallasey Athletic Club - all seven - managed to fill in all events in the second round of the Guardian Royal Exchange Cup at Stretford on Sunday.
The girl's captain, Francesca Phillips, ran jumped and hurdled in no less than six events often with little or no time in between. Janet McGee on form won the 400m. Anne Brimage and Daphne Phillips were courageous to venture among the more spritely youths to provide the club with competitors in all of the arduous events. As is shown here there is a slight lack of depth in the ladies section so we are looking for new members.
If you've got the enthusiasm we'll teach you the rest, so if you are interested ring Francesca Phillips on 632 4261 (ladies captain).
Also this week, Wallasey ladies were running at Hanford, as guests in the Cheshire Relay Championships. The senior girls' 800metre team, Janet McGee, Lynne Kennedy, and Francesca Phillips all ran exceptionally well to finish first and break their own Cheshire record by 18 seconds proving their strength at the event.
