On Saturday the young athletes of Wallasey A.C., after a slight hiccup, eventually arrived at Stretford five minutes before the start of the 100m races.
Leisel Phillips and Jane McCoy, in separate heats of the under-13 girls 100m, both achieved highly commendable personal bests of 15 secs, third and first respectively.
Cheryl Dyer glided through the field to win the junior girls' 100m easily, in 14.6 secs.
Keeping up with the spectacular performances, Mark Cooper against tough opposition in the under-15 boys' 1500m ran seven seconds faster than his personal best. He then went for 400m, coming a creditable fourth.
The 200m races saw two fine runs between rivals Paul Backhouse and Michael King, battling all the way and far ahead of the other competitors, with an impressive victory for Paul and Michael just one-tenth second behind in second, in excellent times
of 30.5 and 30.6 secs respectively.
Ray Eaton had good reason to be pleased with his outstanding performance of 27.7. secs - second in the under -15 boys' 200m.
Although the weather deteriorated towards the end of the afternoon, it did nothing to dampen the spirits and high standard of achievements from all of the athletes in the 800m under-13 girls, Jane McCoy lead the runners until taken by surprise down the home straight. She recorded her best time of 2:42.1 mins, finishing second.
Her team mate Kerry Eaton and Leisel Phillips went on to lead the runners of heat two, running in fine form all the way to finish second and third respectively.
A determined run from Timmy Carr in yet another pair of new. Shoes! - gave him a satisfactory time of 2.36 mins.
Lisa O'Hara, under-15 girls 800m, provided spectators with a race well worth watching - ran well leading the pack and finished a splendid second place.
Special thanks to Mr. King who drove the athletes there AND back, despite the lack of petrol.
