Last weekend saw the senior athletes of Wallasey Athletic Club travel to Crewe to participate in the GRE Cup.
The first event was the hammer. There was great competition between the men and at the end Wallasey's thrower, Chris Preston, managed to finish in third position. Chris was also in the discus and shot. He finished fourth in the discus and putted well to finish first in the shot, with a best putt of 12.66m. Francesca Phillips gained first place in the ladies 400m hurdles, in a time of 67.5 sec.
Neil Tunstall competed in six events and gained two personal bests. These were 56.8 sec in the 400m hurdles, where he finished
second, and 12m 20cm in the triple jump.
Janet McGee, in her first year as a senior, ran two very good races. She gained first place in the 400m and 800m and also ran two good relay legs.
I must not forget to mention Pete Doyle and Robert Peckham, both first year youths, who competed for Wallasey to gain points and help their club.
Rob gained a personal beat in the high jump and was unlucky not to get a better height. But he was pleased with his jump of 1.50m.
Jane Dyer and Lynne Kennedy both gained personal bests in their track races, which were well earned after a hard winter's training.
Pete Jones who is only just back to full fitness, ran well in his races and gained his best time of the year so far in the 800m.
At the end of the day, Wallasey athletes were unlucky not to qualify for the next round.
The ladies finished in fourth place with 89 points and the men in fifth place with 85 points.
Thanks go to Alan Johnston, who provided the coach and drove us there and back and also competed and still managed to gain a personal best in the steeplechase.

Following the senior men's and women's meeting in the GRE Cup, it was the turn of the club's under -15 athletes at Stretford on Sunday, May 30.
A good turn out saw seven youngsters record personal bests, Ray Eaton scoring a double success in the 800 metres Under - 15s boys (2 mins 35 secs.), and the 80 metres hurdles (16.6 secs.).
New athletes to the club did well, with Lisa O'Hara stretching her long jump to 4m 10cm in the Under -15 girls and Julie Morgan, running for the first time in serious competition, recording a time of 30.5 for the Under -13 girls' 200 metres.
Other notable performances were Joanne Johnson, winning both her 100 metres and 800 metres in the Under -11s girls, Liesel Phillips winning her 100 metres and Jane McCoy running well after illness to record a personal best in the Under -11s girls' 800 metres of 2 mins 54 sees.
The performance of the day was by David Neal in the Under -15 boys' 800 metres. Since injuring himself earlier in the year David has not been running to form, but, he ran a gutsy race to improve his personal best by over four seconds to record a time of 2.21.0 secs.
