Merseyside County Women's Amateur Athletic Association held their track and field championships at Kirkby last weekend.
The fine weather was conducive to good results and the first race of the day brought a fine win for Francesca Phillips in the 400m Inter hurdles. Although not producing a personal best time, Fran did win the title in a new championship best performance time of 67.3 secs.
A little later in the day she also ran a 400m flat and came third in a time of 60.9. These two fine efforts brought Fran the trophy for the best inter performance of the championships, a deserved award for a magnificent effort, as well as gold and bronze medals.
Lynn Kennedy in the inter 800m had to battle for a front place at the start of the race and found the early pace a little too much. However, she finished a very close fourth in a new personal best time of 2.23 secs. Lynn is improving with every race and has prospects of a good track season ahead of her. Sisters Jane and Cheryl Dyer produced very creditable early season performances in the sprints, both winning through to the final of their events.
Jane, in the inter 100m finished third in her heat in 13.6 sees and sixth in the final in 14 secs. Cheryl, in the minors 80m finished second in 11.6 sees and seventh in the final in 11.7 sees. Jane also ran in the 200m which was a straight final and finished fourth in 28.4 secs., just missing out on a medal.
Janet McGee opted to run the 400m seniors and found herself up against Janet Roscoe, international and Olympic runner in the heats Janet finished second (ahead of J. Roscoe) in 60.4; but was beaten into third place in the final in a time of 59 secs., well below her best time.
Wallasey A.C. Ladies can feel pleased with their early season results which promise good results in forthcoming events. However more competitors are needed, both male and female. Perhaps the London Marathon will have inspired some 'armchair athletes'.
If so, give coach Doug Hanna a ring on 638 0296. You don't have to be superbly fit. We will make you so.
