After a busy time recently, athletes from Wallasey Athletic Club can feel well pleased with their performances at this early stage of the season.
Wallasey were host to four other clubs in a Cheshire League match at Woodchurch. The outstanding performance of the afternoon was Joanne Johnson, who was a convincing winner of the under 11's girls 800 metres in a personal best time of 2.46. In the same race, Lesiel Phillips ran well to finish third, again in a personal, best time of 2.59.
The following day at Stretford, Wallasey's athletes excelled in the warm conditions. Pete Doyle ran a very good race in the 800 metres, recording a personal best of 2.4.9. and later in the day ran another personal best of 55.4 in the 400 metres. These times now enable Pete to compete in the senior men's Northern League matches and should strengthen the man's claim for promotion this season.
Other good performances included a personal best of 15.30.1 for Bob Brimage finishing fourth in the senior 5,000 metres, despite running the last four laps with a pulled muscle. Pete Jones ran 1.58.5 and 52.8 in winning and Alan Johnson ran 2.8.4 and 59.1 for the 800 metres and 400 metres respectively. Anne Brimage ran 2.39.1 to record her fastest time for several years in Senior Ladies 800 metres.
Last Saturday at Kirkby, Wallasey's Senior Ladies competed in the Northern Counties 3 x 800 metres. After qualifying earlier in the afternoon in the heats as fastest losers, the girls ran very well in the final, finishing sixth out of eight behind Halifax, with Fran Phillips running 2,30.5, Lynn Kennedy 2.25.2 and Janet McGee 2.25.8. The following day the same three girls competed in the Merseyside 3 x 800 metres at Kirkby, but the two races the pre-vious day and bad weather conditions took its toll. Although finishing second behind Sutton, the times were slower than the previous day.
On Sunday, some athletes travelled-to Stretford for an under 15's meeting. Joanne Johnson, ran very well finishing second in her 800 metres in 2.48.9, in very windy conditions. Tim Carr recorded a personal best in the under 13's 800 metres finishing ninth in 2.37.5. Alan Peckham finished second in the under 15's high jump, clearing 1 metre 35 cm.
