Wallasey Athletic Club has been equally as active as any other athletic club on Merseyside, competing in all the area cross-country championships with varying amounts of success.
We are only a small club, but a tightly knit one, but small clubs are rarely the ones making the headlines unless they have a Seb Coe or Steve Ovett. We have not yet an athlete of such potential but we do have many good and promising athletes and arc hoping that those who are yet to join are equally as good or promising.
We would like more members, especially of 13 and over, and invite anyone thinking of track and field events to get in touch and try the training for a month before making up your mind to join. Telephone 638 0296 for details or just turn up at Leasowe Leisure Centre on a Monday, St. George's Middle School Boys' gym on a Tuesday or the Woodchurch Community Centre track on a Wednesday: all sessions start from 7 p.m. for 7.20 p.m.
Last Saturday was the West Lancashire Cross-Country Championships and Wallasey A.C. had representatives in all men's age groups, the competition not including females. The results are given under but special mention ought to be made of Kevin McGee's run in the junior race' over six miles and the boys' team run over their 2½ mile championship.
The club is looking forward to the Northern Championships on February 14th and the National Championships in early March.
Tomorrow, many school age members will be running in the Merseyside Schools Championships hoping that they will be successful in gaining representative honours and be chosen to run for Merseyside Schools in their inter-county championships.
The sponsored run we had recently has so far realised nearly £300 towards our funds, Claremount School funds and a donation towards the forming of the special athletic club for the blind.
