Efforts to find Wallasey Athletic Club a permanent home are going ahead, despite the latest setback which means finding over £2,000.
The club, which at present has no facilities of its own, has been trying to find a running track with the help of the corporation.
The possible use of the track at Henry Meoles School is being looked into but while the Education & Leisure Services department say they are prepared to relay the track, they can only pay 50 per cent of the cost.
Club secretary Mr. Doug Hanna said this would mean at least £2,000 would have to be found. He added that the proposal was still under negotiation.
At present, the club, which was formed in 1906, rotates between local centres for its meetings. From Monday to Wednesday, Wallasey's athletes train at Leasowe Recreation Centre, St. George's School and Woodchurch Leisure Centre, but there are no facilities available for the rest of the week.
Both the club's original pavilions were on St. George's playing fields, but they are now destroyed and the club has been without a home for nearly eight years.
Mr. Hanna said the club was always trying to hold fund-raising events, the latest of which took place this Sunday. A sponsored run from Seacombe Ferry to Leasowe lighthouse and back, total 15 miles, was organised not only to boost funds, but also to help other groups.
The proceeds from the run were split between Wallasey Athletic Club and Claremount School, with each giving a donation towards the setting up of a local athletic club for the blind.
Meanwhile, WAC hosts an attractive meeting this Sunday on St. George's fields.
