Three members of Wallasey Athletic Club's boys' team have, been asked to represent Cheshire in an inter-counties match on Saturday, 24th January.
They are Rick Hemmings, selected because of his sixth place in the Cheshire Cross-Country Championships; Kevin McGee, for his eighth place in the Liverpool & District last Saturday; and Paul Delap for his consistency and steady improvement throughout the season. It is many years since Wallasey could boast three Cheshire team members and I am sure that they will represent their club admirably.
Another success for Pete Jones last weekend. Running 400m at Cosford he clocked a personal best indoor performance and club indoor record of 53.4sec. Pete is currently building up for the indoor championships in March, when another record is bound to be made if his present form and improvement is anything to go by.
The Liverpool & District Championships were held over a very muddy and wind swept Arrowe Park on Saturday.
Although teams were entered in all the races various reasons meant only the boys team competed as a full team.
They finished in fourth place overall through some really excellent running in the conditions.
Kevin McGee really pulled 'one out of the bag' to finish in eighth place and win an individual Liverpool &District medal. Rick Hemmings finished in 18th place running with ankle injury which nearly forced him to withdraw from the race.
Paul Delap has been steadily improving since he joined the club a few months ago and he finished in 16th place. They were backed up by David Southern, Nick Robinson and Keith McAlister.
Phil Ashley the only youth to run from the club surprised himself and a few others by finishing as high as 26th in this race.. After a few years of combined junior and senior races it was pleasing to see separate junior championships this year.
Wallasey sported a full team, but inexperience caused one of our runners to withdraw from the race after three of the five miles. Rod Dixon, improving with each outing, finished 12th and was backed up by Rob Stanley and Pete Jones.
The club has entered for the West Lancashire Championships this Saturday in Lancaster. There is, however, a schools match arranged for Saturday morning, beginning at 10 am. This match is at the Oval Sports Centre and will draw off the majority of our runners.
