Brilliant packing by Matthew Westby, Richard Evans, Tarique Al Shabazz and Daniel Jarvis earned Wirral AC the bronze medals at the National Cross-Country Championships held at Parliament Hill in London.
The under-13 quartet produced the best result for a Merseyside team, the best individual performance going to Matthew Crehan (St Helens-Sutton) who was sixteenth in the under-17 event, although Matt Jackson (Warrington) gave Cheshire clubs a boost by taking 11th place in the under 20 event. Liverpool Harriers were the leading Merseyside team in the men's competition with Richard Burney (29), John McCole (41), Adam Peers (159), Rob Dewhirst (210), James Meldrum (274) and the ubiquitous Alan Ashton (333) claiming 18th spot.
Mark Hulmston was Wirral's leading runner as the club finished 58th and Wallasey A.C., led by Greg Jones, were 72nd.
