Wallasey Athletic Club runners competed far and wide last weekend, with varying degrees of success.
Two female athletes, Janet McGee and Siobhan Power: represented Merseyside Catholic Schools in an inter-area match in Dublin. Janet, who is one of four club members hoping for an English schools title tomorrow, proved her build up is on target.
She won the 800m with a personal best time of 2 min 18.6 sec. She also ran to second place in the 200m.
Siobhan Power came seventh in her 1500m race.
Three male runners competed in the Northern Counties under 20 centenary championships at Hull. The event produced little in the way of athletic entertainment or records.
Ian Macleod, running against a strong head wind, finished third in heats of both the youth's 100m and 200m. His slow times of 12 seconds and 24.1 seconds typified the day's standards.
A shortage of competitors meant Neil Tunstall went straight into the final of the 400m hurdles. He finished fourth and his time of 62.3 sec. was good in the wind.
Kevin McGee had to run in a heat and final in the space of three hours. He came second in the heat with a time of 4 min. 6 sec. He could not muster the same enthusiasm or concentration for the final. Although he recorded a faster time - 4 min. 4 sec. - he came ninth, which was far below his best.
Three club members, Neil Henfry, Stephen Henfry and Mike Perry competed in the grass track races at Chester College, which were organised by Chester & Ellesmere Port Athletic Club.
Neil ran in the Colts age group - 11 and 12 year olds. He came third in the heats of both the 100 and 200m and sixth in the final of each event. His times were 14.5/32 secs and 14.5/ 30.4 secs.
His brother, Stephen ran in the boys' races for 13 and 14 year olds. He came fifth in the 100m in 14.1 secs and sixth in the 200m in 29 secs.
Mike also competed in the boys group. He finished fourth in the 800m in 2 min. 33 secs.
This Friday and Saturday 6th and 7th July is the English Schools Championships in Nottingham in which Wallasey A.C. has four members running for Merseyside, each with a fair chance of getting into the final and bringing home a medal. The members and friends of Wallasey Athletic wish them luck and hope that all readers join us in doing so. Janet McGee competes in the 800m. As does Barbara Jones and Rob Heap whilst Kevin McGee competes in the 1500m.
Kevin travels to Spain on the following Sunday, 8th, to represent England in European Catholic Schools competition, this being his 18th birthday.
