Saturday was not the successful day expected for Wallasey Athletic Club.
A last minute decision to enter the relay meeting at Colwyn Bay, did nothing to increase the confidence of the senior relay squad, soon to be defending their Cheshire 4 x 800 title.
Two relay teams took part, one in the 4 x 400 relay, one in the 3 x 800 relay and two girls travelled and 'made up' teams for other clubs competing in 3 x 800 events.
The 4 x 400 squad was made up of Peter Jones, who ran first leg, fading badly towards the end of the run; Ian Mcleod who ran second leg, ran well, slightly closing the gap; Kevin McGee ran third but the gap again widened. Running in fourth place was Rob Heap, the gap was quite large by now but Rob ran hard and closed the gap slightly again.
The 3 x 800 squad story was similar one. Pete Jones first, holding on well, within two yards, until the last 150 yards when the gap seemed to suddenly widen. The next two runners, Kevin McGee and Rob Heap could do little better to close the gap on the day. However, it should be noted that all three team members ran well below their best, as much as 10 seconds, this possibly being due to the fact that training was not curtailed to allow for the match, indeed it was probably harder than usual.
Siobohn Power and Janet McGee also ran below their best, but proved invaluable members of their teams, each gaining places.
Looking to the future now. This, without doubt, is going to be one of the best track and field seasons for the senior squad and various other individuals for many years. The club captains certainly will not be satisfied with anything less than a personal best performance during the season, and will be doing everything in their power to encourage better performances. The club secretary. Ramsey Hewson or the membership secretaries, Pete Jones and Alan Smith will be glad to hear from anyone wishing to join the club.
