The inter-counties cross-country championships were held in Luton, Bedfordshire on Saturday, representing Cheshire in the junior team was Wallasey Athletic Club member Kevin McGee.
This was his first year of competing in this age group 17 to 20, and he confirmed the selectors' choice and his own fitness by finishing third for Cheshire.
This showed a slight improvement since the county championships. Kevin's 30th place helped Cheshire county to finish in fourth place, just two points behind the third county.
Wallasey had some of its female membership flying the flag and running for Merseyside in the ladies' inter-counties. Janet McGee, Kevin's younger sister, ran in the junior girls event and finished 155th; whilst Shibohn Power and Barbara Jones both ran in the intermediate girls' races and finished 112th and 126th respectively.
The results being obtained now and the selections gained, confirm the need for the continuation of an athletic club in Wallasey and the enthusiasm of the club members. You may recall two weeks ago that I was hoping to report about the medals the club's junior team were to bring back from the Liverpool & District, well, they didn't.
Not to worry, though, nobody else took any either. Due to the atrocious weather conditions and the freezing fog which engulfed the course, the event was postponed until Sunday, February 25th.
The same team has an excellent chance of bringing back some medals from the West Lancashire championships, this week, Saturday 27.
Members wishing to get fit for the track season ought to have started their training by now. Club training nights and venues are the same as always,
