Thirty-four members of Wallasey Athletic Club travelled to Hartford track to compete in the first of the newly-formed Cheshire Track League meetings last Sunday. The league is designed to cater for the full range of ages, male and female, so the club competes as a whole and not a part which accounts for the large numbers travelling.
There were many outstanding personal best performance, which will mean a change in the training targets in this clash between ourselves, Manchester Athletic Club and Winsford. Perhaps the most impressive looking win for Wallasey came from the female section when Lynn Jenkinson led her 800m from start to finish to finish in 2min 39sec, some 20m clear of the second placed runner. The most unexpected win, as he wasn't due to compete at this meeting, came from the well-seasoned youth's captain, Kevin McGee. In a hard and well-fought battle over the 800m, Kevin just managed to edge ahead with 50m to go and win with a time of 2min 4.2secs and shatter his previous best over the distance.
Ian Macleod made a welcome return to competition and gained a first place in his 100m race, returning a time of 12.7secs, fractionally faster than Neil Tunstall whose second place was run in 12.9secs. Neil also ran an impressive leg of the 4 x 200 relay to bring the team through from a trailing second to an easy first place.
The women's relay team wasn't so lucky they suffered the same fate Lol Harrison ran a superb first 200m, which give us first place, but by the time Lynn Jenkinson received the baton on the last leg, she was a trailing second and even though the gap narrowed, that is how it stayed.
These relays rounded off an enjoyable, if wet, afternoon's athletics and proved a useful and enlightening stepping-stone to the men's Cheshire Championships and Women's Merseyside Championships being held on Saturday, May 14.
Next Sunday sees many of us competing at Kirby Stadium in an open meeting when, again, good times are envisaged.
