The was more going on on Saturday 15th than the reported league meeting. Four Wallasey Athletic Club members were competing at Warrington in an inter schools league meeting. They were Tommy Bond, who finished 57th , Dave Southern 58th, Stuart Crowe 88th; and Keith McAlister 91st. They all ran quite well to finish as they did out of the 150 starters.
Meanwhile Pete Jones and Chris Preston were competing indoors at R.A.F. Cosford in the first of the indoors meetings. Pete ran a 600 metres 0.8 secs. faster than he did in the equivalent meeting last year to record 87.6 secs. Considering that he is still on stamina sessions, as opposed to speed sessions, this is quite a, good performance. Chris Preston's performance is as yet unknown.
Last weekend was the first of what is hoped will be an annual inter league match, cross-country, at Clarkes Garden. Allerton. There were three races in all between the boys, youths' and senior age groups. The five competing leagues were Mid-Lancs, Red Rose, West Yorks., S. E. Lancs. and Liverpool & District. Two members of Wallasey Athletic Club were asked to represent the Liverpool & District team, Chris Wright having to decline due to a school commitment. Rick Hemmings, however, accepted and ran in the boys race over a 2-mile course. Despite his injured knee he finished 32nd in 12 mins. 33 secs.
The athletic club is gradually increasing its strength in the colts, boys and youths age groups, and should turn out full teams this Saturday for the last, of the league meetings in West Derby. This is the last of the inter-club type meets, the others being more of the championship variety with selected teams. As always, transport could be a problem, so if you are a member with a car or an interested parent willing to help out in this way please contact Doug Hanna, giving details of when and how you can help.
