New Brighton hill work for athletes

Wallasey Athletic Club are still training five times a week. You may have seen them. On Monday evening we travel as a club from St. George's middle school, Leasowe Road, to a well known hill in New Brighton, which even some cars have trouble ascending, this being Portland Street.

Various training runs are performed here. On Tuesday evening the club stays in the school gym for circuit training and various games such as basketball and five-a-side football. It should be emphasised here that only those members who train regularly with the club may attend on this night. Wednesday is track night and the club travels to Woodchurch Community Centre for various track activities which tend to be more gruelling than on any other club night. Thursday is an easier night when a longer road run from St. George's School is partaken in, usually along Leasowe Road or the promenade. Friday and Sunday are the rest days which leaves Saturday afternoon. If we have no fixture on Saturday, then we train from the Girl Guides H.Q. in Leasowe Road.

Any person, however, fit or unfit, is welcome to join us on any of the above days. Sessions start at 7:30 p.m. except for Saturday which starts at 2:30 p.m. Ideally the session starts at the times given so all taking part should meet from half an hour before.

Present members who haven't been training recently and indeed any potential members may be interested to know some of the forthcoming fixtures in which the club will be participating:-

Nov. 1st : 1st league run - Sherdley Park, St. Helens.

Nov. 15th: 2nd league run - Clarke Gardens, Allerton.

Nov. 29th: 3rd league run - West Derby or Arrowe Park.

Dec. 6th: H. S. Finney, cross-country relays - Clarke Gardens, Liverpool.

Dec. 20th: Christmas Handicap - from Girl Guides Hut.

Jan. 3rd: Cheshire Championships.

Jan. 10th: Liverpool & District Championship - Lancaster.

Jan. 31st: Northern Championships - Morpeth.

There are other fixtures which only involve those members still at school and others which individual members enter themselves such as the indoor meetings at R.A.F. Cosford, the 200m indoor track seen so often on the television.

Parents are welcome to help us, providing transport, holding a stopwatch, helping us to start a parents association. If you are interested in any way in the athletic club and would like more information then come along on any of the days previously mentioned.
