For the opening run of the Liverpool & District Cross-Country season there was a muster of 81 runners at the Gateacre headquarters of Liverpool Harriers last Saturday. Wallasey A.C. with 14 members out provided the second largest contingent of the eight clubs represented.
In this race the runners keep together for the first three or four miles with periodic halts to await stragglers. Over the last mile there are two races one for seniors, the other for novices (those who have never previously won a prize in an open event).
From the point of view of Wallasey A.C., the afternoon proved a wonderful start to the new season. In previous years they have regularly done quite well in this race, but last Saturday must have easily eclipsed their past performances. In the novice break the club was successful in placing five out of the first six home. J. Richardson led from the start and won fairly comfortably from his club mates, K. Andrew and D. Grisedale, with J. Whittingham, running surprisingly well for one who has not been out before this season, fourth. Pritchard fifth and Fishwick, seventh, were not far behind.
The senior race was more closely contested, but Wallasey runners again had every reason to be satisfied. N. Marples did exceptionally well to finish third, close behind Frost of Pembroke (second) and Turner of Wirral (first). Edwards in the fifth place also did well.
To-day there will be a training run, starting from the club-house at the top of Leasowe Road at 3.15. New members should get in touch with the secretary, J. Edwards, of 16 Ferndale Avenue.
