Wallasey Athletic Club's men's section were narrowly beaten last Saturday in the final league meeting of the season at Warrington Athletic Club grounds. They were pushed into second place after an exciting battle.
The final result was undecided until the last moments when Longwood Harriers edged ahead to win both of the afternoon's competitions by 245 points to Wallasey's 235½ and Warrington's 223½ points. They also ended by heading this division of the league, thus gaining right of entry into the National Premier League.
As usual, the league meeting forced club members to take part in too many events for one afternoon, and also events to which they were unaccustomed. Even so, the standard of performance was extremely high and many personal best's were recorded.
The first event was the 400 metres hurdles in which Doug Hanna came fifth in the 'A' in 61.3 secs. and Dave Ashton second in the 'B' in 61.5 secs.
In the 800 metres, Pete Lewis came first coming through very strongly in one min. 38.2 secs. In the 'B' race Bob Warburton came second with the same time as Pete Lewis. This is a personal best for Bob.
Keith Sorrel came second in the 'A' 100 metres in 11.3 secs. and Alan Cheers fourth in the 'B' race in 12 secs.
Bob Brimage came second in the 'A' 3,000 metres steeplechase, and Terry came fourth in the 'B' race in his first ever steeplechase.
Keith Sorrell made a fine new personal best, in the 200 metres coming second in 22.7 secs. and Alan Cheers was fourth in the 'B' in 23.5 secs. In the 1,500 metres, Pete Lewis came second in four minutes and Bob Warburton was fourth in the 'B' in four minutes 21 secs. While the track athletes were amassing their points, the field event people were doing an equally effective job.
Carl Gee and Chris Preston competed in the hammer, discus and shot. In the hammer, Chris was second in the 'A' with 41.78 metres and Carl second 'B' with 33.4 metres. In the shot, Chris was fourth 'A' with 32ft. 11ins. (a personal best), and Carl third 'B' with 32ft. 10ins. In the discus, Chris recorded another personal best of 34.83 metres to come second 'A' and Carl finished second 'B'.
Another athlete with some personal bests to chalk up was Doug Hanna who threw the javelin 135 ft. 4 ins. to come fifth 'A', while Mike Teahan came third 'B' with 132 ft.
