Several younger members of Wallasey Athletic Club ladies' section took part last Saturday in the Cheshire schools cross-country championships at Tatton Park. It was also a triangular inter-counties event with teams from Staffordshire and Shropshire taking part.
Lynn Carter and Diana Kelly ran in the junior race and came 17th and 30th respectively.
The conditions were extremely muddy and Lynn, a diminutive competitor, was very aware of some of the opposition were using her to pull them out.
In the intermediate race Helen Taylor was placed 11th.
In the senior race Susan Lloyd ran well to finish 9th and 4th for Cheshire. Audrey Mackay followed her into 10th place, 5th for Cheshire.
Wallasey's Julie Halfpenny finished two places behind at 12th.
While the girls were working hard near to home, a party of eight travelled to Cosford to watch the Great Britain versus East Germany indoor international. It was a very good afternoon's athletics and a big stimulus to see top people in action.
This weekend the women's National Cross-Country Championships are taking place in Rawtenstall, North Lancashire, the meeting has a total of over 1,000 entrants and nearly all Wallasey Athletic Club's ladies' section will be taking part.
