Wallasey Athletic Club's Margaret Ashcroft came seventh in an International New Year Race in South Wales on Saturday, despite an injured foot. Only a small team travelled to the Nos Golan races at Mountain Ash this year, but great hospitality was shown to them by the same family who took the team in last year.
The first race took place in heavy mist at 3 p.m., which was a disappointment, as the television cameras were on the spot for the first time. Bob Brimage took part in this race, but finished only 52nd. In the evening International race, Barbara Banks came 21st. Dave Jenkins won the 100 yards dash, and Just before midnight Dave Hemery ran down from the mountains as the mystery runner to the start of the four-mile race, but it was a false start and the race was a shambles.
The Liverpool & District Cross-Country races were held in Arrowe Park again this year. The first race was the colts, who came in 25th and last; poor, but expected, results due to lack of training. The club has been greatly hindered in its training by vandalism to the clubhouse in Leasowe Road. In the boys' race, Dave Gray gave the most impressive performance, finishing 26th, with Brendan Kelly 38th, Jones 40th and Chris Derereaux 43rd.
