Several members of the Wallasey Athletic Club competed in the St. Helens Police Sports meeting in rainy conditions. Janice Watts won first prize in the senior ladies' 400 metres with a time of 60.4 sec. and Phil Wade finished 4th in the junior men's race with 54.1 sec.
Pete Lewis ran a very well judged 800 metres and was only narrowly beaten by two yards into second place by Warrington's Dave Brennan. Pete's time was a personal best of 1 min. 52.2 secs. Earlier in the week he had represented the British Universities team in a triangular match between British Universities, Midland Counties and the RAF, and had finished fourth over 800 metres in 1 min. 52.6 sec., beating the current British Universities champion in the process. The senior men's long jump at St. Helens was won by Phil Truscott with a leap of 19ft. 9in., closely followed by colleague Alan Cheers with a distance of 19ft. 7in.
At an invitation at Enfield last Saturday Barbara Banks finished third in the 3,000 metres event with 10 min. 15 sec.
At an inter club meeting at Woodchurch last Sunday Janice Watts again won over 800 metres with 2 min. 18 sec. With Mary Caldwell 6th in 2 min. 42 sec.
Carl Gee was third in the senior men's discus with a throw of 110ft. 2in. supported by Chris Preston, still in the youths' age group, who threw 85 ft.
New member, Alex Keith, threw 80ft. to finish 4th in the senior women's javelin and Margaret Cotton was 6th in the senior discus with 84ft.
The club will be fielding a team in the Rivington Trophy at Bolton today.
