Wallasey Athletic Club sent an enthusiastic but depleted team to the second Northern Women's Cross-Country League meeting in Carlisle on Saturday. Only one team in the senior section was from Wallasey.
The three-mile course was an interesting one, made up of two laps of rough, hilly farm country which did not favour speedy track types. Liz Connors of Preston, won the race in a time of 17 minutes 31 seconds. Wallasey's first woman home, Margaret Ashcroft, ran a good race to come sixth in 18 minutes 16 seconds.
Janice Watts was seventh, having started well and continuing bravely after a bad patch in the middle. Barbara Banks finished next, Susan Lloyd, Wallasey's fourth counter, finished 37th.
The team finished second to Stretford A.C., 37 points to 58, and are now lying overall third, but certainly within reach of second place when the final league run is held next month.
Wallasey A.C. also had competitions in the junior section although they were missing a fourth counter. Helen Taylor finished 24th and looked very strong as she worked her way up the field. Hilary Upton was 41st and Diana Kelly 45th.
The intermediate section is for girls aged 15 to 16. New members in this age group are welcome.
This weekend four teams will compete in the National Road Relay Championships at Newcastle-under-Lyme. The men's section is taking part in the Waterloo Road Race.
