Fulfilling the excellent promise they showed when they finished second in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Championship three weeks ago.
Wallasey Athletic Club junior team last Saturday achieved a greater honour by securing the second team place behind Sutton Harriers in the West Lancashire Championships at Croston. Over a six-mile course much of it waterlogged and broken by wide ditches and stretches of plough, Wallasey's Liverpool & District junior champion, Denis Kelly (7th), gamely accepted the challenge of the young Sutton Harriers' champion Mick Moleedy (1st).
Wallasey's captain, Harold Thompson (8th), backed up strongly, and was followed closely by Bob Johnston (11th) and Tony Simpson (16th), giving a team total of 42 points.
In the senior race Wallasey's team failed to close in i.e., to finish a team of six runners. Final positions were E. Foster (31st), Tony Dickinson (32nd); R. McCaig (43rd); J. Rimmer (47th), and C. R. Hewson (48th).
This Saturday the members of Wallasey Athletic Club's under 16 team versus Prenton Road Secondary School meet at Electricity Showroom, Wallasey Road at 2 p.m. for the No. 11 bus. Next Saturday the junior team and their supporters for the Northern Championships at York meet at Lime Street Station at 8.45 a.m.
Last Saturday afternoon at the Leasowe Road headquarters, Wallasey Athletic Club junior weight-lifting team beat Crewe Barbell Club juniors by the narrow margin of 20lbs
