In bright sunshine last Saturday more than a hundred Merseyside runners took part in the Liverpool & District Cross-Country Union's meet at Court Hey, Broadgreen, to inaugurate the 1948-49 season.
Novices covered 3 miles and seniors 5 miles, at an easy pace before the final mile break. Wallasey Athletic Club can be well satisfied at placing 6 in the first 15 men to finish the senior mile race, led by Denis Dickinson who was 4th man home. The value of the track work put in this summer is illustrated by this result. Arnold Dinsdale is to be commended for a creditable second place in the novices' race upon his first appearance for the club in a local competition.
In the weight-lifting match last week, Crosby 1st team beat Wallasey 1st team by 120lbs, after receiving a handicap of 40 lbs. Crosby 2nd team were also victorious, beating Wallasey 2nd team by 62lbs after receiving 87 lbs.
Sixteen years old Ron Brownbill, of Wallasey Athletic Club, who weighs under 8 stone himself, put up a fine performance in the 8 stone class last week when he broke three Cheshire weightlifting records. He raised the two hands curl figure from 66 to 69 lbs., and both the hold out raised and the hold out lowered figures from 34 to 43 lbs.
