During the last few years road racing has become increasingly popular, especially in the South, where, for many clubs in the London area, country in scarce and tracks too expensive, until now a fairly defined road-racing season has evolved extending from mid-March to mid-May.
In the North, however, this form of athletics has not enjoyed quite the same popularity, but there are signs of a growing interest in Northern road promotions.
On 8th April, the Tuesday following Easter Monday, the Sheffield Telegraph stages its Sheffield - Doncaster road race over the marathon distance, 26 miles 385 yards, and on 19th April the Merseyside Marathon Relay will be held at Sefton Park, when the distance will be run in eight relays.
On the last two occasions this race was held, 1938 and 1939, the local club, Wallasey A.C., finished third both times, and there is much optimism about the club's prospects this year.
Dogged by injuries and sickness throughout the winter, Wallasey Athletic Club have a strong, hard-working team of runners, and the results of recent Championships do not give the club full justice.
In the West Lancashire Championships for instance, the senior team ran fourth to Sutton Harriers, who went on to win the Northern and National titles as well. In a record season
Inquiries re Wallasey Athletic Club should be made to the Hon. Secretary, R. F. Hubbard, 39, Beech Road, Birkenhead.
