Some of Merseyside's best distance runners will be in action this Saturday, on the occasion of Wallasey Athletic Club's first cross-country fixture, with Liverpool Harriers & A.C., at Leasowe Road.
The visitors will have T. O'Mahoney, their pre-war champion and holder of the Marathon Relay Record, E. Rogers, their club champion, and E. Gallagher, the noted miler, running for them. On the Wallasey side experienced athletes in J. S. Arkless, G. K. Williams and G. Andrew will be backed up by the club captain, J. Edwards, himself Liverpool & District Champion. Six runners will count for each team, first man home scoring one point, second man two, etc., the team with the lower number of points winning. The two clubs are evenly matched, and a good race should ensue. The five miles course starts and finishes on Leasowe Road, close to Wallasey Village Station, works down the country to Pasture Road, Moreton, turns on to the embankment, over the shore and along Telegraph Lane to Leasowe Road.
Within the Wallasey Club interest is focussed mainly on the novices who will compete in the West Lancashire Novice Championship on December 7th. R. E. Young, son of Mr. R. Young, the old Wallasey champion, is moving well and will lead the team. Wallasey Athletic Club was third in 1936 and 2nd in 1938, the last time this championship was held.
The hon. sec., Wallasey Athletic Club is , R. F. Hubbard, 39 Beech Road, Birkenhead, telephone Birkenhead 3550, who will be pleased to answer any enquiries.
