A small team from Wallasey Athletic Club returned some fine results at Warrington last Saturday to finish third with 234 points in the first meeting of the Northern League, Blackpool won the match with 261 points.
In cold, windy conditions the first track win came from Phil Wealthy in a tactical 800 metres race. A very fast second lap brought Phil to first place with a time of 2 mins. 21.2 secs.
Dave Lockley won the 3,000 metres steeplechase 'A' race, ably supported by Bob Brimage, who won the 'B' race in a personal best time of 10 mins. 12.2 secs,, Bob also gained another personal best in winning; the 5,000 metres 'B' race in 16 mins. 2 secs.
The old club record in the hammer throw was at long last removed by Carl Gee, with an excellent early season throw of 111 ft. 2 in. to secure second place and a personal best in competition. Phil Holmes also finished second in the 'B' competition with 76 ft. 7 in.
Alan Cheers gained second in the 'A' string triple jump, as did Phil Truscott in the 200 metres 'B' race. Andy Fulton won the 'B' string javelin with 144 ft. 1 in. behind Mike Teahan, who finished third in the 'A' event.
The ladies section take part in their Cheshire Championships today at Port Sunlight and the men will have their county championships tomorrow at Woodchurch.
