Eight members of Wallasey Athletic Club competed in a Stretford League last Saturday, most of them trying their hand at the 800 metres.
Pete Lewis faced stiff opposition from his fellow members of the British Milers Club and finished sixth with a time of 1 min. 55.9 secs. Phil Wealthy gained second place in the 'B' race, recording 1 min. 59.3 secs. and Mike Teahan finished sixth, in 2 mins. 1.9 secs. Bob Brimage was seventh, in 2 mins, 8.9 secs.
Sprinter Dave Ashton entered the youths' 800 metres and returned a creditable time of 2 mins. 13 secs., and Margaret Ashcroft, not fully fit, produced 2 mins. 35 secs. in the ladies' race.
Mike Teahan also ran in the senior 200 metres 'B' race but could only finish fourth in the first sprint of the season with 24.9 secs. Phil Truscott, in the same race, ran well to finish second in 24.5 secs.
The club's most heartening performance was a convincing win by Dave Lockley in the senior 3,000 metres steeplechase returning a time of 9 mins. 37.8 secs.
Members will be preparing themselves in training this weekend for next week's meeting of the Northern League and the ladies' and men's county championships two: weeks later.
