At a closely contested inter-club athletic meeting at the weekend, Barbara Banks scored her first victory since her six month absence from competitive running. Over the fast two-mile course Barbara led from the start with C. Helsby (Stretford A.C.) and Liz Connor (Preston A.C.) in second and third places.
With the senior and intermediate races combined, the next Wallasey girl home was Sue Lloyd in 13th position, a good run against many senior girls. Audrey McKay was 17th, Susan Carter 20th and Julie Halfpenny 22nd.
In the under-12s race, Lyn Carter, inspired by Barbara's success, nearly won the race.
She led all the way to be defeated in the final sprint by a young Altrincham and District A.C. runner.
Mike Teahan was the only men's representative. He produced a good performance and finished 23rd in a field of over 70 runners.
Wallasey A.C. had two winners in the girls' section at the Kirkby winter track meeting. Susan Carter was very convincing in the senior 300 metres recording a best time of 45.8 sec., Julie Halfpenny also did well over the same distance, winning in 48 sec.
Today, the men's team are resting for Wednesday's Waterloo Road Relay, an event which normally attracts opposition from all over the North and Midlands. The girls will be making the long journey to Blaydon for the second Northern League meeting in which they have high hopes of toppling Stretford A.C. and Airedale and Spen Valley A.C. who defeated them in the last league match.
