In the fifth annual Bolton Road Relays, Wallasey Athletic Clubs senior women's team were just beaten into second place by Northern champions Bury and Radcliffe A.C. after leading until the final leg.
On the first leg of the 3 x 2½ mile relay Wallasey's Margaret Ashcroft and Derby Harriers international Gillian Tivey battled the whole way round for the initial advantage. At the handover the Wallasey girl was only 8 secs. adrift with a time of 14 mins. 38 secs. Wallasey's international Barbara Banks took over taking the lead and recording the fastest time of the day, (14 mins. 09 secs.) to establish a lead of over a minute over Bury and Radcliffe who had come through to second place. Liverpool student Janice Watts took over for the final leg but without too much running recently was unable to hold off the strong challenge of Pat Lowis of the Bury Club who came through in the final mile to leave Wallasey in second place and Derby H & A.C. in third.
