Long jump injury puts him out of pentathlon

In the National Veterans Championship at Derby, Carl Gee won the long jump with a distance of 17ft. 5in.

Carl, Wallasey Athletic Club coach, was hoping to be able to compete in a five event pentathlon competition but with no event of this nature he was forced to attempt the individual events. After a second place in the javelin he clinched he clinched his victory in the long jump with his third jump. Unfortunately he was injured on his final jump and was forced, to scratch from his other events.

The victory, is a fine reward for his hard training which should be an inspiration to many of the club's younger athletes.

Today is the New Brighton road relays of 4x2 miles, a reasonable entry has been received for the senior event in which Wallasey Athletic Club's team will probably consist of Phil Wealthy, Mike Teahan, Len Durkin and Dave Hughes.

Last year's winners, Sutton Harriers have again entered and should be favourites to repeat their victory if they can hold off the challenge of Manchester and District Athletic Club, whose team will include the 1970 European indoor 3,000 metre champion Ricky Wilde.

Several young Wallasey athletes are competing in the Cheshire Schools, in the senior events, Bob Brimage should win the steeplechase event and Bob Warburton is likely to be well placed in the 1,500 metres.
