In the first Liverpool & District League meeting, Wallasey Athletic Club got off to a good start having the first three home in the senior women's race, and the second individual, Dave Lockley, in the senior men's race.
Prior to this race, Dave's best league placings were around sixth place. Showing his best form for the first time this winter he made alI the running on the fast 5½ mile Warrington course only being beaten on the run in by the ex-Wallasey athlete Ron Barlow (Sutton Harriers).
With Dave Lindsay, John Wright and Phil Wealthy unavailable the next runner home for Wallasey was Mike Whiteside in 17th place in 33 mins. 35 secs., a good run, 3 mins. 20 secs. behind the winner.
In 25th place was Barrie Smith with a time of 34 mins. 34 secs. after being left at the start and making up 100 yards on the field.
Mike Teahan was just behind in 26th place in 34 mins. 48 secs. with Len Durkin 36th place in 35 mins. 55 secs. and Dave Adair in his first run for the club this winter 57th in 42 mins. 28 secs.
Wallasey were 4th team, Sutton Harriers winning with 32 points from Wirral A.C. with 77 pts. and Warrington with 136 pts.
In the women's race over two miles Wallasey athletes took all the individual honours. Barbara Banks was the individual winner recording 12 mins. 4 secs. from Margaret Ashcroft in 12 mins. 40 secs. and Janice Watts in 13 mins. 25 secs.
Less than half a minute behind were two intermediates, Gillian King and Lindsey Mutch in 7th and 8th places.
The junior girls underlined the superiority of Wallasey's women's section winning the team race despite the absence of Christine Horobin. With good team running all four girls finishing within 6 seconds. Gillian Murray 4th in 11 mins. 33 secs. followed by Lyn Carter, Sue Kelly and Vivian Higinson.
The youngsters in the men's section could not quite give their seniors the same support.
The only Wallasey runner in the youths' race was Bob Brimage, who repeated his good run of last week in finishing 3rd in 17 mins. 57 secs. only 6 seconds behind the winner.
In the colts over 12 race Eddie Kanes, making his debut for the club took 20th place in 13 mins. 48 secs., 21st was Steve Kelly, 30th Neil Simpson, and 32nd in his first race for the club Brian Kanes. In the under 12 race Davy Jones ran very well to take 6th place in 11 mins. 12 secs.
