Wallasey Athletic Club men's section ended the cross-country season on a rather dismal note. The team pool of twelve runners all of whom were present in the second league run were reduced, by injuries, illness and unfitness to four for the final Liverpool & District League Meeting, held at St. Helens.
Of the four senior runners competing only Mike Whiteside did himself justice finishing 22nd, his best ever league placing. In his best run since the New Year.
Dave Lindsey, suffering still from an achilles tendon injury made a welcome return taking 11th place. In 34th and 36th positions respectively were Mike Teahan and Len Durkin, the former well below form in a rather indifferent end of season field.
League winners for the second year were Sutton Harriers from Wirral Athletic Club. The individual winner being Peter Roberts (Sutton Harrier) from Richard Brown (Liverpool Pembroke). In the Cheshire Schools Championships two younger runners well up to form in the race. Neil Simpson finishing 87th and Eddie Kanes 90th in a field of nearly 300. There are no races today but anyone interested will be welcome at the Club Headquarters, Leasowe Road from 2:00 p.m. when training will commence. Tomorrow is the first Warrington track meeting and a large party of local athletes are expected to compete. This meeting being an opportunity for the the athletes to test their finess.
Over fifty guests and friends attended a Hot Pot supper organised by Wallasey Athletic CIub at the Nelson Hotel. The first event of its kind the club has held for some years. Club captain, John Wright thanked everyone for making the evening such a success especially the Supporters Association who attended in force.
The meal was followed by a selection of films from Mr.Hewson and Mr. Hanna's own version of last summer's Commonwealth Games.
