In Wallasey Athletic Club's sealed handicap, youth came out on top, young Lynn Carter winning by a mere eight seconds from Lindsay Hewson and Neil Simpson. As usual the handlcappers did a good job, the first seven handicap times being within-half a minute of one another.
With club captain John Wright ill, Bob Brimage showed himself as a future club champion leading from start to finish with complete confidence. Coming through late to snatch second place from Len Durkin was Mike Teahan, who could well have been a threat to Bob but was tired from training the previous week when he had covered 70 miles in preparation for today's northern cross-country championships.
With handicapping the younger members came out on top, Lynn Carter, a very promising junior girl; being well satisfied with her first ever win after a well judged race.
Other noteworthy efforts were by veteran Ramsey Hewson running his best race for some years, and Helen Taylor having her first taste of distance running with the club.
As a result of the Cheshire schools cross-country championships, Gillian King was the only Wallasey athlete selected for the county team. Gillian ran well to take 5th place in the senior event and should justify her selection for the team by a high placing in the English schools cross-country championships, which will be held later in the month. In the same race Lindsay Mutch can probably count herself unlucky being injured and only managing 15th place, just being beaten by club rival Susan Lloyd.
In the Lancashire schools cross-country championships at Blackburn, Wallasey's only runner, Mary Caldwell, finished in 6th place despite a troublesome knee injury.
She was unlucky in being denied a place in the Lancashire team, some one finishing behind her being selected instead, the second time this has happened to a Wallasey athlete recently, John Wright being denied a placing the Cheshire team in similar circumstances.
