In the women's inter-counties cross-country championships at Blackburn, the senior county team finished 11th, and the intermediate team in fifth position.
Four Wallasey Athletic Club runners competed in the senior race of 2½ miles over hilly and heavy country. Second runner home for the Cheshire team was Margaret Ashcroft, who in finishing 18th produced her best performance ever in the event.
At 35th was Janice Watts competing for Lancashire and holding off her club rival Mary Caldwell who on this occasion finished 48th in her first representative run.
Also making her Cheshire debut was Helen Thomas who finished 64th.
Individual winner was Jean Lochead (Yorkshire), the girl who finished second to Barbara Banks in the Northern League. Just 100 yards behind was Thelma Bateman (Warwickshire) and third was Rosemary Cullen (Hertfordshire).
The intermediate team took the highest placing of any of the men's or women's teams in fifth placing. From Wallasey, Gillian King ran well to finish 42nd with Lindsay Mutch 69th. Individual winner was Catherine Helsby (Lancashire).
Largest field of the day was in the junior event, where Christine Horobin ran well above her recent form obviously at home on the tough course, finishing 42nd.
Today the men's team will be competing in the West Lancashire Championships to be held at Clarkes Garden, Liverpool. The course is over nine miles, two miles further than any of the championships held so far, the extra distance should favour Wallasey's' marathon runner Mike Whiteside who must be due for a return to form after some dismal performances in recent weeks.
A good performance can be assured from Dave Lindsay who must be favoured for a place in the first six. The West Lancashire event is the final of the local championships before the Northern Championship in two weeks time.
In addition to the competition Wallasey faced in the Liverpool & District Championships, challenges will come from Blackpool and Fylde A.C. and Preston Harriers.
