The first meeting of the cross-country season was a Liverpool & District match over a fast Woolton Park course.
Wallasey ladies' section came out of the meeting with the better honours providing the individual winners in both the senior ladies and the intermediate girls races.
Barbara Banks was a very convincing winner of the senior race in 13:06 seconds, well backed up by the ever improving Margaret Ashcroft in third place, over 2½ mile course. The intermediate girls race was won by Sylvia Brimage in 14:37 seconds, a young girl with talent. Close behind were Susan Carter, Lindsey Mutch and Gillian King in fifth, sixth and seventh places.
The junior girls were led home by Gillian Ackers in fourth position, with Susan Lloyd, Julie Halfpenny and Lindsey Hewson close up in support.
The men's section found Sutton Harriers, the present League champions, still in good form in the senior race. Dave Lockley was Wallasey's first runner home, 15th in 32:52 seconds for the 5½ miles, a disappointing run for him. Dave Lindsay was 19th in 33:12 seconds. John Wright was 29th in 33:40 seconds, much improved running by these two. Barrie Smith struggled to 38th place in 34:25 and Phil Wealthy was 41st in 34-32.
In the boys' race (over two miles) Alan Ostler was 18th in 12:31 seconds. Geoff Becchey, Gwyn Griffiths, Mike Vick and Ken Halewood completed the team, promising performances by these young athletes who with some hard training, could form a useful team.
Next week is an inter-club meeting at Warrington for the men and the ladies travel to Blackburn for a league meeting.
