A small select team represented Wallasey Athletic Club at St. Helens last Saturday, in an inter-club competition involving 11 clubs, and finished in sixth place with 126 points.
The host club, Pilkingtons, won with 275 points, followed closely by Warrington A.C., with 270 points.
Ian Wilson defied the strong wind along the home straight, to which his opponents succumbed, and won a well judged 400 metres in 52.3 secs. Bob Warburton grappled with the conditions in similar style to win the junior 800 metres from Tim Gregory of Warrington in 2m 0.3s, Dave Lockley gained, a personal best time in running 800 metres in 2m 1.5s and Mike Teahan's personal best of 5ft. 4ins. won the senior high jump.
John Rowlands, a new member, won the youths' high jump with 5ft. 3ins. and Barbara Shaw came second in the intermediate ladies' high jump and discus, as did Alan Cheers in the Senior men's triple jump.
Meanwhile, nearer home, three of the club's seniors ran in a field of 73 starters in the
Bebington - 15-mile road race. Mike Whiteside finished 30th, followed by a not fully-fit Dave Hughes at 31st and Len Durkin who was 37th.
