In last Saturday's third and final league race, held at Sherdley Park, Sutton, St. Helens, Wallasey Athletic Club's runners were once again led home in the senior race by Dave Lockley, who finished well in 8th place in 36 mins. 45 secs.
He was well backed by Barrie Smith, 20th in 38 mins. 16 secs.; Johnny Jones, 27th in 39 mins. 16 secs.; Mike Teahan, 40th, 40 mins. 45 secs.; Ray Kay, 47th, 41 mins. 33 secs.; Len Durkin, 56th, 43 mins. 08, secs.; and Dave Hughes, 63rd, 44 mins. 03 secs.
Alan Keating, who was affected by a long journey home from London on Friday night, suffered greatly during the early stages of the race and was forced to drop out, as did Phil Wealthy.
The winner was Ron Barlow, an ex-Wallasey runner, but now with Sutton Harriers; 2nd Leo Carroll, Wirral; and 3rd Brian Renshall, Sutton, giving Sutton the team race.
The youth's race, in which Wallasey could not count even one runner this time, finished in a dead heat between Tim Gregory (Warrington), and George Murphy (Wirral).
In the boys' race Wallasey's three team counters were Gary Fair, not running true to form and finishing 8th in 8 mins, 46 secs.; Bob Brimage, 11th in 8 mins. 56 secs.; and Bob Warburton, 13th in 8 mins. 58 secs. The other two Wallasey runners were three or four years younger than most of the other boys, but both finished very well - Steve Daniels at 37th in 9 mins. 55 sec.; and Gwyn Griffiths 40th, in 10 mins. 15 secs.
The individual winner of this 1½ mile race was Steve Deegan, Pembroke,
This Saturday, Wallasey's male athletes will be at Arrowe Park for the H. S. Finney 4 by 31/3 miles relay races.
The boys' team stand a reasonable chance of beating Wirral and Pembroke.
The girls also are representing Wallasey tomorrow with junior and intermediate teams entered in the Cheshire Championships at Stockport.
