Last Saturday in the Northern women's road relays at Derby, Wallasey were represented by junior and senior teams. The junior team sadly arrived at the venue only minutes before the start of the 3 x 1 mile relay and Sylvia Brimage did a grand job finishing to first lap in sixth position only 22 secs. behind the leader.
Having literally run, from the car to the start and with no time for a warm-up, it was a very creditable performance. Susan Lloyd then took over and ran well to hand over to Julie Halfpenny in eighth position. Julie brought the team home in 11th position, a very encouraging result in a field of 27 teams.
In the senior race, Barbara Banks led off for the first leg of the two-mile laps, finishing in fourth position, Margaret Ashcroft look over and managed to gain two places, so that the team were lying second.
Despite a valiant attempt by Sheila Clark, the strength of the Airedale and Derby teams showed in the final lap, and Wallasey were narrowly edged out of third position. Bury and Radcliffe were worthy victors, almost three minutes ahead of the next team home.
Wallasey ladies' section is at last looking towards a bright future in the field of road racing and cross-country and now that the track season is getting under way, we are hoping our track and field athletes too will soon be out in force.
