There will be something for everyone in this weekend's programme of athletics with the Cheshire County road relays at Port Sunlight today and an end of the season meeting for track and field enthusiasts at Kirkby Stadium tomorrow,
Wallasey A.C. will have one senior and two youth teams entered today and in both cases will be turning out their biggest teams for years. The senior team will be Ron Barlow, Doug Hanna, Barrie Smith, Mike Whiteside, Brian Woolford and John Wright.
As in all relays, much will depend on the running of the weaker runners in the team, and today Doug Hanna and Mike Whiteside will carry much of the responsibility for success.
The club has never been as strong in youths as it is today, and it is possible that the 'B' team could run well enough to take one of the minor placings, whilst the 'A' team should bring the gold medals back to Wallasey.
Earlier this week Johnny Jones broke his wrist (for the second time) and although he will have to compete with a plaster on his arm, such is his running ability that he will retain his 'A' team placing, partnered by Dave Lockley, Steve Walker and Melvin Schless who makes his debut in this event. The 'B' team consists of four runners, any one of whom could switch to the 'A' without much loss of strength.
A varied programme of track and field events should ensure a good turnout for tomorrow's 'end of the season' meeting at Kirkby Stadium, start 2:30 p.m.
