In the second of the annual relays held by Wallasey Athletic Club Wirral A.C. again dominated the proceedings and completed the double over their hosts.
The youths' event saw Steve Walker as the only home athlete who was able to prevent Wirral A.C. finishing first, second and third. A good run by Walker put him in third position, 25 seconds behind the winner, George Murphy.
Colin Reiners ran well to finish eighth, closely followed by B. Peberdy, a promising new member of Wallasey A.C., in eleventh position.
The senior event was run over the same course. John Jones ran first for Wallasey and returned in third position in 8 min, 4 sec. On the second leg Mike Teahan consolidated his position in the 'A' team with a fine performance, returning in fifth position.
It now needed a good run to put Wallasey back in the race. Barrie Smith, showing great determination, provided it, Starting off some 50 yards in arrears of Mike McCabe, of Walley A.C. (Birmingham), he soon overhauled him and set about catching the third-place man. Finishing in third position, Smith recorded a time of 8 min.

Dave Lockley was now left in an awkward position. An impossible gap had opened between Wallasey, the third team, and Pembroke. But Lockley had three rivals chasing him. With his usual calm he soon began to pull away, bringing the home club back into third position.
