By a majority of 164 to 140, the bankruptcy of athletes was temporarily averted by the decision of the Amateur Athletic Association's general meeting in London last Saturday: a 10s. levy is to be imposed upon all athletes of 17 years and over, who wish to compete in open competition.
Whilst this may appear to be a harsh decision, some consolation can be taken from the fact that 50% of an expected £5,000 will be passed back to the areas for local use.
Cheshire County committee have decided not to re-run the youths' road relay championship race which came to a halt at the end of the first leg, when runners went off course due to inadequate marking,
This will almost certainly deprive Wallasey A.C.'s youth team of their first championship medals of the season, as the resulting 'consolation team race' which followed the mix-up was decisively won by the club's 'A' team.
However, the majority of these athletes will still be youths next year and should have no difficulty in proving their worth in the 1967 event.
This year's cross-country championships are to be split into two sections, with the boys', junior girls' and senior girls' races to be held at Winnington Park on Saturday, December 3rd, and the youths', juniors and senior events will take place at Arrowe Park on Saturday, January 7th.
